Which jewelry doesn't tarnish? The guide to lasting shine

Bijoux dorés en acier inoxydable qui ne noircissent pas

A piece of jewelry we adore, worn for a few weeks… and then it's tarnished, with green skin underneath. Frustrating, right? The good news: it's not inevitable. Some materials simply don't tarnish. We'll explain why your jewelry tarnishes, which materials to choose for lasting shine, and how to care for them.

Why do some pieces of jewelry tarnish?

Tarnishing (or the famous green mark on the skin) comes from a chemical reaction: oxidation. When exposed to air, water, sweat, perfumes, or cosmetic products, some metals react and tarnish.

The main culprit is often copper, present in many inexpensive alloys (brass, bronze, plated). When it oxidizes, it darkens and can stain the skin. Nickel, on the other hand, also causes allergies and redness in sensitive skin.

Materials that do not tarnish

1. Stainless steel: the everyday champion

This is the most reliable material for jewelry you never want to take off. Stainless steel does not rust, darken, or tarnish, even when in contact with water. It is hypoallergenic (when nickel-free), durable, and retains its shine for years. You can shower, swim, and play sports with it, without worry. This is exactly why we chose it at Maison Lyne.

2. Solid gold

Pure gold does not oxidize or tarnish: an excellent choice… but its price reserves it for exceptional pieces. Be careful not to confuse it with gold-plated (see below).

3. Titanium

Lightweight, very strong, and hypoallergenic, titanium also does not tarnish. It is mainly found in men's jewelry and for piercings.

Materials to avoid (if you want to avoid unpleasant surprises)

  • Brass and copper: they tarnish quickly and turn the skin green.
  • Gold-plated: beautiful at first, but the thin layer of gold wears off over time, revealing the metal underneath, which then tarnishes.
  • Sterling silver 925: magnificent, but it oxidizes and tarnishes if not worn or maintained regularly (it can be cleaned, however).
  • Alloys containing nickel: to be avoided for sensitive skin.

How to keep your jewelry sparkling longer

Even with good material, a few simple steps will prolong its shine:

  • Put on your jewelry last when getting ready: after perfume, cream, and makeup.
  • Avoid prolonged contact with chemicals (household products, chlorinated pools).
  • Store them dry, in a pouch, away from humidity.
  • A quick wipe with a soft cloth from time to time is enough to restore the shine.

With stainless steel, these precautions are a bonus, not an obligation: that's precisely the advantage of jewelry made for real life.
